Community Service: A Sorority Standard

Sunday, March 01, 2009

03-01-2009.jpgThe sorority life offers you the chance to gain exposure to worthwhile charitable organizations, develop a personal philosophy for giving back and earn community service hours that are required by many universities. Every National Panhellenic Conference sorority has at least one inter/national philanthropy that it supports through fundraising efforts and hands-on service experiences.
Each year NPC sororities contribute over $5 million to philanthropic projects and donate thousands of community service hours to important causes. These figures reflect the tremendous difference that sorority women make in the world.
In addition to the inter/national philanthropic initiatives sponsored by NPC sororities, many chapters are committed to making a difference to their universities and surrounding communities. Assisting with freshman move-in day, executing neighborhood clean-ups and raising funds for local beautification projects are just a few examples of projects sorority women participate in to make a difference in their communities.
What distinguishes sororities from just another club on campus can be described in one word: Sisterhood. The bond of friendship that is formed in a sorority chapter is very special and strong. This is one of the reasons that many sorority chapters choose to support additional philanthropies that are important to their sisters. For example, a chapter may support the local diabetes foundation because a sister is a diabetic, or a chapter may participate in a breast cancer walk-a-thon because a sister's mother is a breast cancer survivor.
The positive philanthropic experiences gained by sorority women as undergraduates provide a great foundation for these women to have a long-term commitment to volunteerism and charitable giving.

Winston Churchill said, "We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give."

Giving back is a significant part of being a sorority woman.
