Sorority Sisters are Lifelong Friends
Saturday, May 01, 2010
One of the best rewards of sorority membership is the friends that you make through your affiliation. Many women join sororities knowing that it is a great way to meet a large group of women, but few understand the impact that these women will have on their lives both during and after college.
The strong bonds of friendship develop during the undergraduate years. There are so many shared experiences that create the foundation for lifelong friendships. Sorority sisters are not just the friends you go to parties with--although social events are a big part of sorority life, and sisters most definitely have fun together at parties. But there is much more to this relationship.
Sorority women serve as mentors and role models for their sisters. They share leadership opportunities and help sisters hone their own skills. They help open doors for sisters to have opportunities to serve as student leaders both in the chapter and on campus. Sisters participate in philanthropy and community service projects together, which make a difference in their local communities and in the world. For many, these experiences will create a lifelong commitment to service.
Paramount to the sorority experience is the secret ritual that links generations of sisters. It is remarkable that regardless of when you graduated or where you went to school, all members of each specific sorority participate in that group's unique ritual. These sacred rituals provide another level of closeness between women. These shared experiences create a strong foundation for lasting friendships.
It is common for sorority sisters to be roommates after college, stand as bridesmaids in each other's weddings, serve as godparents to each other's children and continue to be there for all the special milestones in each other's lives.
An unexpected bonus of sorority life is the friendships that you may form with sorority sisters after college. You may meet sorority sisters in your new town, at your job, through your involvement with your inter/national organization, through your family, etc. There are so many ways you can meet sisters from your chapter and other chapters across the country. Your next best friend may be a sister who didn't even graduate from your school.
The bonds of sisterhood are strong, and your sorority sisters will be by your side for a lifetime.
