NPC In The News

Pheeling Philanthropic

Wednesday, April 18, 2018

The sorority experience offers young women the chance to learn about charitable organizations, develop a personal philosophy for giving back and earn community service hours required by many universities. Every National Panhellenic Conference sorority has at least one national philanthropy (see list here) that its members support through fundraising efforts and hands-on service experiences.

Each year NPC sororities contribute more than $5 million to philanthropic projects and donate thousands of community service hours to important causes. These figures reflect the tremendous difference that sorority women make in the world.

In addition to the national philanthropic initiatives sponsored by NPC sororities, many chapters are committed to making a difference to their universities and surrounding communities. Assisting with freshman move-in day, executing neighborhood clean-ups and raising funds for local beautification projects are just a few examples of projects sorority women participate in to make a difference in their communities.

What distinguishes sororities from just another club on campus can be described in one word: Sisterhood. The bond of friendship formed in a sorority chapter is very special and strong. This is one of the reasons many sorority chapters choose to support additional philanthropies that are important to their sisters. For example, a chapter may support the local diabetes foundation because a sister is a diabetic, or a chapter may participate in a breast cancer walk because a sister’s mother is a breast cancer survivor.

The positive philanthropic experiences gained by sorority women as undergraduates provide a strong foundation for a long-term commitment to volunteerism and charitable giving. Giving back is a significant part of being a sorority woman.
