Growing up with a family that wasn’t close, Alexandria Neilan has found a family and a home in her sorority.
Who I Am
Like me, the majority of students at my school are commuters. This presents a problem when trying to get involved on campus. I didn’t enjoy school the first year and a half because I struggled with trying to meet new people. I wanted to do something, but didn’t want to join just any club. In the spring of my sophomore year, I decided to participate in recruitment. When I met my sorority sisters, I sensed they would be the family I needed and could help me excel in ways I thought I never could. Sorority life has taught me to be a stronger person and to not let certain circumstances decide where my life goes.
Words to Live By
“Write it on your heart that every day is the best day in the year.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson
I think too many people let their hardships take over their lives, and they forget to have fun. If people just believed each day would be a good day, then it would be.
I want to work for a nonprofit organization that supports either the environment or women’s rights.
Why I Joined
I joined a sorority not to feel part of something, but to do something for myself and for my community.
My sorority sisters are my life. They are always there for me, they know when I’m upset and they appreciate me. I know these women will be standing with me on my wedding day and with me when I’m old and gray. Without them, I do not think I’d be as happy as I am today.
What is Sorority Life Really Like?
Being in a sorority is nothing like what the stereotypes say. Just putting on your letters, gives you a sense of pride. As a sorority woman you give back to your community, meet people you probably would’ve never met otherwise and you have a confidence that you didn’t have before. It is not just hanging out, it’s doing things that bring a smile to your face and other’s.
When going through recruitment, don’t assume that every sorority chapter is the same. Take the time to get to know the women, ask questions about the chapter and the members.
I try to be involved in any community service projects that I can. For example, I participate in Relay for Life and I’ve registered students to vote.

Though this may sound cheesy, my favorite place to be is in the company of loved ones.
I love dance, reading, attending concerts and traveling.
I am guilty of shopping for earrings – an accessory that always fits and looks great.
